Featured member .... Charlie from Whittlesea
If anyone epitomises the spirit and values of the U3A movement, it is Charlie, a 13 year member of U3A Whittlesea. He emigrated to Australia from Malta in 1967.
Married to his wife, Freda, since 1976, they now have two children and four grandchildren.
Charlie retired in 2005, and a year later found out about their local U3A through Whittlesea Council.
He and Freda are both active in the very popular line dancing classes held by the U3A, with them dancing three times a week alongside the 80 or more other members of their line dancing groups. Freda also tutors in crocheting while Charlie attends a computer class on a weekly basis and is a regular contributor to the U3A’s newsletters. He and Freda are both regular attendees at the many social events hosted by the U3A, including day trips.
Charlie especially loves to sing and to write songs, which he shares with the other members of the U3A’s choir. He is a regular at the U3A’s Monday morning teas, during which they celebrate everyone’s birthdays with Charlie leading the singalong. He says, “I love it so much, to have the chance to sing, because I love to sing. Best thing that happened to me was joining U3A.” He says his favourite thing about U3A is meeting people. He encourages everyone to join their local U3A and to get involved!
