Did you know? U3As worldwide are celebrating their 50th anniversary!

The U3A (University of the Third Age) movement started in France in 1972, when a group of retired individuals formed a self-help learning cooperative. The idea quickly spread to other countries, and the first U3A in the United Kingdom was established in 1982. The U3A (University of the Third Age) movement started in Australia when the first U3A was established in Melbourne in 1984. The idea quickly spread to other parts of Australia, and there are now over 200 U3As across the country, with tens of thousands of members.

Since 1972, the movement has grown rapidly and there are now U3A organizations in many countries around the world, including Brazil, China, India, South Korea, Turkey and the United States.

The U3A movement provides educational, social, and creative opportunities for people who are no longer in full-time employment. Members share their skills and knowledge through a range of activities, including classes, interest groups, and lectures.

U3A Network Victoria extends our warmest congratulations to the U3A movement on its 50th anniversary. This is a significant milestone and a testament to the vision, dedication, and hard work of all the individuals and organisations who have contributed to the growth and success of the U3A movement over the past five decades.

The U3A movement has had a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals around the world, providing opportunities for lifelong learning, social engagement, and personal growth. U3A has also played a key role in promoting intergenerational dialogue and understanding, and in fostering a more inclusive and vibrant society.

U3As in Victoria are honoured to be a part of this global movement. We look forward to continuing to work together to promote U3A values and to advance our mission in the years to come.
